The Tuki Sauna Co. HQ - Orion Plus

As more people across New Zealand look to invest in a cedar sauna at home, the conversation is shifting. It is no longer just about adding a standalone structure. It is about how that sauna integrates into the landscape, how it is used day to day, and how it elevates the overall outdoor environment.

The most considered projects do not treat the sauna as an afterthought. Instead, they approach it as part of a wider design. Something that works in balance with its surroundings and becomes a natural extension of outdoor living.

Set on the banks of the Tuki Tuki River, The Tuki Sauna Co HQ is a clear example of this thinking in practice. Designed as both a private retreat and a working display space, it reflects a broader approach to outdoor sauna design in New Zealand. One that prioritises placement, materials, and how the space is actually lived in.

Designed to sit within its surroundings

The brief from the outset was clear. Create something that sits naturally within the landscape while making the most of it. A space that captures the views and feels like a seamless extension of daily life.

Positioning was key.

Rather than placing the sauna for convenience, it was oriented to take full advantage of the surrounding valley and river outlook. This decision shapes the experience, from the quality of light throughout the day to the sense of openness when inside the sauna.

The Orion Plus cedar sauna was the natural choice for this setting. Its 180 degree glazing opens the space out to the landscape, creating a strong connection to the outdoors while maintaining privacy.

A refined material palette

The Orion Plus has been configured with a considered and restrained finish selection.

Externally, black metal cladding grounds the structure within the landscape and gives it a clean, architectural presence. Internally, the space is lined in clear red cedar, bringing warmth, texture, and contrast to the darker exterior.

Full insulation has been included, along with a short L return bench that supports both individual use and small groups.

The result is a sauna that feels balanced and intentional, both in its materiality and its overall form.

Creating a complete sauna experience

What elevates this project is how the sauna connects to a broader wellness experience.

The adjoining shower enclosure is fitted with the Allegro twin supply copper system, complete with a hand shower and foot wash. This allows for seamless cooling between sauna rounds and introduces a natural rhythm to the experience.

Beyond the sauna, a Stoked Stainless outdoor bath has been positioned to take in the landscape. While it functions as a cold plunge, it has also been fitted with hot and cold copper tapware and a hand held shower, allowing it to shift into a two person outdoor bath when desired.

This flexibility ensures the space can be used in different ways, across seasons and occasions.

Designed for use beyond the sauna

A well designed sauna space does not begin and end at the door.

The surrounding elements have been chosen to support how the space is used before, during, and after the sauna itself.

Outdoor furniture by Artwood creates a place to sit and unwind. A mobile glass fire adds warmth and atmosphere, while a cantilever umbrella by Shade 7 pivots between the bath and seating area to provide shelter where it is needed.

Positioned to capture the evening sun, the result is a space that invites you to stay.

More than a sauna, part of the landscape

This project demonstrates what is possible when a sauna is considered as part of a wider outdoor design.

Rather than being placed within a space, it becomes part of it. Integrated into the landscape, connected to its surroundings, and supported by complementary elements that enhance the overall experience.

For those considering a sauna in New Zealand, the takeaway is simple. The most successful outcomes come from thinking beyond the structure itself.

When approached this way, a cedar sauna becomes more than a standalone feature. It becomes a destination within the property, one that supports both wellness and the way you choose to live outdoors.
